David Richards, former Headmaster

We are saddened to have heard the news that David Richards, a former Headmaster of The Portsmouth Grammar School, has passed away peacefully on Friday 6 January, aged 85 years. The Portsmouth Grammar School owes an enormous debt to David’s leadership between 1975 and 1983 for helping to create the thriving independent and co-educational school that we are today. David moved to Portsmouth in 1975 with his wife, Margaret, and three young children at a time when the school’s Direct Grant status was under threat. A Day to Remember

To commemorate this event, the Royal British Legion holds a Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on the day before Remembrance Sunday, and this year, the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir, together with the Cantate Choir were honoured by being invited to sing there for the two services on the day. David Russell, former Chairman of Governors, RIP

We are saddened to hear that David Russell, former Chairman of Governors, passed away on 19 July following a prolonged period of illness. David was highly respected as a leading lawyer and senior partner at Blake Morgan (then Blake Lapthorn).  He joined the Governing Body of Portsmouth Grammar School in 1979, serving as Chairman of Finance and General Purposes from 1984 and, from 1988 until 1993, as Chairman of Governors.  David worked closely with then Headmaster, Tony Evans, together forming a significant partnership in the stewardship and development of the school.  During this time PGS became fully co-educational, establishing a…

Former Pupil Awarded OBE

Former pupil Edward Leask (1955-1965) has been awarded both an OBE and a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Community Award for Outstanding Contribution. Director of the WPNSA, Sir Ben Ainslie commented on the double award, “Edward Leask has made a real impact on the sailing scene, an Olympic sailor himself he had the foresight to help initiate the development of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. He is a key player in ensuring the sports venue has a successful and sustained legacy following 2012. Volunteer Sri Lanka


  Yasmin Caldera, a former pupil who passed away in July, was a wonderful, caring individual and had been planning to volunteer at an orphanage through Volunteer Sri Lanka.   A fund has been established to allow one person annually from The Portsmouth Grammar School, to volunteer in Sri Lanka in Yasmin’s memory.  If you would like to find out more about the fund, or to donate to it, please click here.
