WEST by Steven Berkoff
West was first performed in London in 1983, and is a play based
upon Berkoff’s own experiences of the East End. It follows
the story of Mike, and his mob, and his battle with the ‘Hoxton
Monster’, whilst meanwhile examining his relationships with
family, girlfriend and self. Berkoff’s language is lyrical,
fast-paced and extremely visceral. It is through this hugely energetic
text that we encounter a world of gangs, fist fights, greasy spoons
and discos.
The July production of West has now been cast, and preparations
are underway. Comprising of 9 GCSE students from Year 11, it will
begin rehearsal after they have completed their exams in June. For
a period of two weeks the students will be working intensively towards
performance, from 9am until 5pm every day.
They’ve had their scripts since the piece was cast back in
March, and will arrive at rehearsal prepared, with their parts learnt.
It is not an easy play - strongly based in concise movement and
physicality, but equally very text heavy and lyrical, with a vast
amount for all characters to learn. This will, undoubtedly, be a
challenging experience. It is, by its nature, a very stark, empty
piece, with settings and scenarios created by the actors’
bodies and voices. Movement is exact, the accent is difficult, and
the text itself is quick and precise. However, the cast certainly
have these skills and will respond well to this demanding process.
The music and sound of West is to be composed and designed by Mr
Andrew Henderson. This will incorporate original composition, cockney
anthems and abstract noise. It will play a major role in the production,
in aiding the actors in create the world of the brutal East.
West will be performed from 12th -14th July 2007, in the Studio
Theatre at the Kings. This exciting project is taking place during
the renovations of the Kings’ auditorium, and the stage will
be transformed into a black box studio.
Tickets (£8) are available from the Kings Theatre Box Office
