GIRLS AND BOYS IN THREE NATIONAL FINALS
Girls and boys had to battle against atrocious weather as well
as their rivals when they competed in three major national competitions.
The intermediate girls’ athletics squad, drawn from Years
9 and 10, came third in the English Schools’ Cup for track
and field at Hull and its junior side, from Years 7 and 8, were
seventh, having made it to the top 12 in the country for the first
time.
The U15A cricket side was at Kibworth Cricket Club in Leicestershire
playing Peterborough-based Oundle School in the final of the prestigious
Lord’s Taverners Colts Trophy and was doing well until rain
finally stopped play, not before everyone had been on and off the
pitch three times. The fixture is to be re-played at Arundel Castle
on Monday 8 September.
At Hull, the intermediates lost to South End and Millfield despite
some fine performances and personal bests in pouring rain, among
them Francesca Reid who took three seconds off her 800m time, Jessica
Wilcox knocked one second off her 1500m and Philli Paxman threw
a p.b. in the discus. The team’s top scorer, Jade Parker,
also landed a p.b. in the shot. Jessica is currently in Portugal
representing Great Britain in the Atlantic Cup, an international
youth tetrathlon competition.
In the junior team, Sophie Brigg knocked 10 seconds off her 1500m
despite being a year young for the age group. Sophie Andrews and
Kirsten Hall both sliced six seconds off their 800m. Hannah Seal
notched up 4.59m in the long jump, a new school record and Rosie
Harper also scored a p.b. in the same event. Megan Kendall delivered
a p.b with 1.38m in the high jump and Alice Worsley improved her
javelin to 17.51m and knocked a second off her 1500m time. Anna
Pembery achieved another p.b. in the hurdles. Top points scorer
was Hannah Seal.
Athletics coach Mrs Mandy Day said: “The girls have all trained
hard this season and did extremely well to qualify among the top
dozen squads in England. To come third and seventh was a fantastic
achievement and they should all feel very proud of themselves. As
a school, we are certainly gaining a nationwide reputation in girls’
track and field.”
Head of Cricket, Mr Scott Curwood said: “It was a shame that
rain stopped play at Kibworth as the boys had been really looking
forward to the final, which will now take place in September.”
Oundle decided to bat having won the toss but were restricted to
175 for nine with Robert Tusler taking three for 26 and Cameron
Prentice, three for 30.
“We were happy to chase this total with bowlers and fielders
producing a fine performance. When the final downpour started, we
had reached two for 50 off 10 overs having already been on and off
the pitch three times. The boys have the rest of the summer season
to hone their skills and are looking forward to the re-match.”
