The beginning of the 1960s saw the revival of the boater for sixth formers and the introduction of drama and music co-productions with the girls’ High School. By the early 1960s the school had around 950 pupils and the number of university entrants more than doubled. Additional land and buildings adjacent to the existing school buildings was acquired and a multi-purpose hall was completed in 1964.

In 1965, Hibbert was succeeded by Coll MacDonald who recognised the need to  adapt to the liberal spirit of the age.
