We received the very sad news during the Easter holiday that Dr Michael McCall, formerly Head of Mathematics at PGS, had passed away peacefully at his home on the Isle of Wight.

Michael was an outstanding Mathematician, teacher and tutor, and a much respected Head of Department. Although relatively private by nature, he was known by pupils and colleagues alike for his warm sense of humour and passion for Mathematics.

Michael was Head of Mathematics at PGS from 1996 to 2010 before retiring fully from teaching in June 2012. During his time here he dedicated himself to sharing his knowledge and love of Maths, inspiring pupils to represent the UK in the International Mathematics Olympiad and secure places at many of the country’s leading universities.

As The Portmuthian records, whilst some pupils may have occasionally complained of the headaches generated by Further Maths, “in Dr McCall’s case, he made the subject so clear it seemed as though he was simply opening doors to sunlit gardens.”

Michael will be much missed by everyone in the PGS community.

The funeral will be held on Monday 14 May at 11:00 at St Edwards Brotherhood Orthodox Chapel, Brookwood Cemetery, Brookwood, Woking GU24 0BL.  Afterwards the reception will be held at The Gorse Hill Hotel, Hook Heath Road, Woking, Surrey GU22 0QF
