Pupils at The Portsmouth Grammar School are today celebrating the outcome of years of hard work and dedication to their studies, with an excellent set of GCSE results. After changes to the systems for awarding grades this year, pupils now receive either their centre assessed grade, or their exam board moderated grade, whichever is higher.

“This is a delightful year group, who have brought a brilliant approach to their senior school years and accomplished a huge amount, both inside and outside the classroom. We are incredibly proud of how they have responded to the challenges they have faced during this year, and hope that they can enjoy celebrating their achievements after this period of significant uncertainty”, said Head of The Portsmouth Grammar School, Dr Anne Cotton.

While pupils may not have had the summer term they were expecting, their participation in our pre-Sixth Form programme will have prepared them well for the new Sixth Form enrichment curriculum being introduced this year.  With a focus on independent study and the fundamental skills required for success across all subjects, in combination with a unique blend of further enrichment that included the PGS Higher (an independent research project), a MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) and a short course on ‘Exploring Entrepreneurship’, it is our hope that pupils will feel excited about embarking upon Sixth Form study.

One of the pupils celebrating today is Dulcie Langley who has been at PGS since Year 7 and is now looking forward to starting Sixth Form. “I am really happy and relieved with my results,” said Dulcie. “The last term was really strange, but it was good to keep busy with the different courses and projects that the school gave us the chance to do. Now I’m just looking forward to starting Sixth Form.”

Oliver Kettle is also celebrating his results today having balanced his competitive swimming at national events as part of the Portsmouth Northsea Team. “It was very weird not to take exams but I think I achieved the results that I deserved,” said Oliver. “I worked hard to balance my swimming and school work. This morning before the results I had my first training session back in the pool – so it’s been a good day so far. I’ll start PGS Sixth Form in two weeks – after all these months it will be good to get back, see my friends, staff and start my A-Levels.”

Alice Ren can also celebrate today after receiving an excellent of GCSE results today. “PGS has helped me hugely throughout my time here so far,” said Alice. “I have enjoyed learning about different topics and subjects, as well as personally improving myself over these years. I am pleased with my results, although it definitely feels strange to receive results for exams that I didn’t take! I’m looking forward to studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and French in the Sixth Form, as well as beginning to decide on a concise career path.”

“I feel very lucky to have been able to attend such a great school and am thankful to all of my teachers for helping me throughout the years,” said Ollie Spencer who achieved a fantastic set of results. “I am thrilled with my GCSE results and am looking forward to my future at PGS Sixth Form where I will be studying A-levels in Maths Chemistry and Biology.”

Also celebrating a very strong set of results is Flora Sprague. “I am very, very pleased with my results,” said Flora. “I really enjoyed the pre-Sixth Form courses and think they have definitely helped me get ready for starting Sixth Form in September, they kept my brain working while being at home for such a long time!”

“Supporting our pupils at this key stage in their education, ensuring that they felt a continued sense of purpose during this challenging time, and preparing them for their next steps was incredibly important to us,” concluded Dr Cotton. “We are now looking forward to helping our Year 12 pupils make the very best start to their Sixth Form studies, as we prepare to welcome pupils back into our community onsite in September.”

There is extensive support on offer for all of our pupils and a large team of experienced staff are on hand throughout today and over the following days to offer guidance.
