Year 12 English Literature A Level and IB pupils enjoyed delving into the rare book collection at Chawton House Library this month..

After a comprehensive tour of Chawton Manor House, where pupils learned about Edward Knight’s (Jane Austen’s brother) lucky inheritance, Dr Helen Cole, an expert in rare books and book illustration, showed them a range of incredibly rare and unique books, featuring a Cheap Repository entitled ‘The Sorrows of Yamba: A Negro Woman’s Lamentations’, as well as mid-19th Century scrap books. The most popular was a pocket book of medicine, which the group found completely absorbing.

Following this, pupils visited the Jane Austen Museum and played at the piano forte much to the amusement of fellow visitors!
