The Portsmouth Grammar School is situated in the heart of historic Portsmouth.

School Bus Service

We run five home to school bus routes. The routes are shown on the map above, there is also a local shuttle route to and from the Hovercraft terminal and Portsmouth Hard to link up with Gosport Ferry and Portsmouth Harbour train station.

We partner with Vectare, a specialist in school transport management, to assist us with running these routes. The service is bookable via an easy online system which can be viewed here: https://pgs.vectare.co.uk

A booklet on the service with the map and other information can be found here.

Cars

The city is linked to the motorway network by the M27 and M275, and, being central to the city, the road network easily leads you to our door. There is ample parking around the school enabling easy drop off and collection of pupils.

Until 9.30am on school days you can park free of charge on Museum Road (including coach bays), Cambridge Road and Pembroke Road. It is not limited by time provided your vehicle is gone by 9.30am. In the afternoon, the coach bays are not available and there is an unpublished 20p charge for 15 minutes in Museum Road, Cambridge Road and Pembroke Road.

Trains

The train is a particularly popular way of coming into the city each day. Trains come into Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour stations from Haslemere, Petersfield, Chichester, Fareham and other towns just outside Portsmouth. Both city stations are within a fifteen-minute walk of the school.

Average Train travel times for journeys to Portsmouth & Southsea Station from:

  • Chichester: 25 minutes
  • Fareham: 23 minutes
  • Haslemere: 47 minutes
  • Havant: 17 minutes
  • Hedge End: 37 minutes
  • Petersfield: 31 minutes

Ferries and Hovercraft

Ferries and hovercrafts constantly traverse the water from the Isle of Wight, Gosport and Hayling Island. The Isle of Wight and Gosport terminals are again within a fifteen-minute walk from us.

There is a minibus service for pupils from the Southsea Hovertravel terminal to school, details of this can be found in our School Bus Service booklet, linked here.

Hilsea Playing Fields

Travel

Hilsea Playing Fields are located approximately 4 miles away from the main school campus and provide the facilities for most of the outdoor sports programme.

All Junior School pupils are taken to and from Hilsea on buses supervised by Junior School staff.

Pupils in Year 7 are taken to Hilsea on buses supervised by Games staff and are escorted back to the school site after games.

All pupils in Years 8 – 11 travel to Hilsea for their Games session on buses supervised by Games staff. Sixth Form pupils can catch a school bus to Hilsea or can make their own travel arrangements to their Games venue.

All pupils from Years 8-11 will be dismissed from Hilsea at the end of the school day.

Staff will always ensure that there are no pupils left at Hilsea Playing Fields before leaving the site. If pupils have not been picked up by 16:15 then the member of staff will arrange for them to be transported back to school.

Parking at Hilsea

Unfortunately, there is not sufficient space at Hilsea to allow supporters to park on site on match days and weekends, alongside the single lane access making it difficult to turn. Please click here for details on nearby parking.

Dogs

Dogs are not allowed at Hilsea Playing Fields.
