The first round of Senior House Chess was a well-attended event with all houses having oversubscribed teams. It led to some exciting games, and other players looking forward to taking their moment in the spotlight the following week. After the first round the scores were very close with Whitcombe on 12, Latter on 11, Grant on 9 and Smith on 8.
Round two was not as well attended though Whitcombe still managed to field a full team. The games played still resulted in some close scores. With Whitcombe pitched against Grant and gaining 10 points over Grants 9. Latter won against Smith by 9 to 5 points, though only two games were played.
The final round was playoff time with the battle for first and second place being played between Latter and Whitcombe, Whitcombe two points ahead, and the battle for third place between Grant and Smith. With the scores so close between the leading houses the results went down to the final game. In the end Latter were victorious - winning the competition overall with 31 points. Whitcombe came a very close second with 30 points. Grant came third with 26 points and Smith came fourth with 23 points.
It was an excellent competition with some closely fought games. I commend all those who took part for the great sportsmanship that was shown. Well done for some great individual performances - Ed UB winning all three of his games gaining 9 points for Latter, and Samuel VDB winning two and drawing one gaining 8 points for Smith. In addition to this the game of the tournament was the one played between Samuel and Dylan H - it resulted in a draw displaying the talents of both.
