PGS was pleased to host a talk by former history teacher, Michael Scott-Baumann who is involved with the Balfour Institute which seeks to work for the peaceful co-existence of both states . He spoke on the complex and fraught topic of Israel Palestine.

Speaking to a large and lively audience in the BCSC Lecture Theatre, he gave a clear historical context to the issues impacting that part of the world, not least Britain’s involvement and problematic legacy. It was gratifying to see a full cross-section of both pupils and staff present, and the lively questions that followed were testament to the quality of the presentation as well as highlighting the range of perspectives held on the topic.

The talk was jointly organised by Ms Garcia and Mr Lemieux which also pointed to the overlap of History and Geography in trying to grapple with the issues raised. As a school community, we aim to provide our pupils with the information and perspectives that will enable them to be intellectually curious in their approach to contemporary issues, embrace a compassionate and reflective understanding of different viewpoints, and work together, collaboratively to try and achieve mutual respect even where opinions differ.

The talk was filmed and is available to watch, along with an  interview with Michael, on the Portsmouth Point blog - please click here to view.
