Love Reading at PGS

PGS Community Academic

Supporting children's developing reading for pleasure habits is at the heart of PGS. From offering diverse and engaging texts in our curriculum, to encouraging pupils to present on books that inspire them in Literary Society, we actively promote a 'we are readers' culture from pre-school though to Sixth Form.

Guided Reading Mentors and Reading Leaders are central to this promoting this culture. Pupils from Year 9-12 volunteer every week in the JS playground to read to pupils before school, offering opportunities for younger members of the community to dip into fiction before the start of a busy day.

In addition to this, Year 12 Guided Reading Mentors work with Year 7 each week during tutor time to discuss and explore a wide variety of challenging and wide-ranging fiction, ensuring that pupils are offered plenty of opportunity to find the book that will really inspire them to continue reading for pleasure. The conversations between pupils are so impressive that we invite Year 7 parents to observe the sessions in Spring term to demonstrate the importance of continued book talk.

We promote to parents the importance of continued reading of pleasure, book talk, and reading to their children. Reading is a community effort: pupils, teachers, librarians, and parents, all working together to create the next generation of readers.
