Our vision is to nurture children’s natural enthusiasm to learn. By understanding what our children already know, we inspire learning through excellent play opportunities and a passion for bringing a rich and varied curriculum to life. Our aim is to prepare our Pre-School children for entry into our Reception year at the Grammar School.

Thoughtfully planned learning opportunities aim to lead the children towards self-motivation and challenge, encourage self-discipline, perseverance and commitment. The staff team scaffold the children as they learn and develop.

The Portsmouth Grammar School Foundation Stage provides for children’s individual needs and celebrates their achievements. Children are encouraged to become independent learners who think creatively and reflectively. Working in partnership with parents/carers, the children are encouraged to be supportive, tolerant and work collaboratively and individually. In demonstrating respect for others and for themselves, the children will develop an attitude that will help them to be successful throughout life.

The recent ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) inspection in 2016 and the previous Ofsted inspection in 2013 both recognised the outstanding and excellent levels of Early Years’ provision (Pre-School and Reception) at PGS.

The Pre-School is situated within the grounds of The Portsmouth Grammar School. Our purpose built building is designed on one level and is situated on an historic site. It is a modern pre-school facility with wheelchair access. The pre-school benefits from an onsite medical centre and team of medical practitioners. There are separate snack and dining areas. The pre-school has the use of excellent school facilities including a theatre, dining hall, parents room, adventure playground and minibuses. A thriving toddler group welcomes families from the local area.

Our staff are qualified, experienced and dedicated to providing stimulating fun experiences suitable for each child’s individual needs and have expertise in dealing with allergies and SALT difficulties.
