‘Hmm, difficult. VERY difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There’s talent, oh yes. And a thirst to prove yourself. But where to put you?’
The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
We don’t have a sorting hat at the Junior School but we do have a House system that is as much a part of our children’s lives and school as it is for Harry and his friends at Hogwarts. As our children enter Year 3 they are placed into one of four Houses; Privett, Nicol, Jerrard or Hudson. They remain part of that House for the next four years taking a full and active role in it. Housemasters and Mistresses are responsible for the children in their Houses and meet with them on a weekly basis. There are regular House events and competitions and each House has its own charity, which it supports throughout the year.
Every child is encouraged to take an annual House Badge Test, where they complete a number of challenges in order to gain the honour of wearing a coloured ribbon on their school blazer. House points can be gained for good work, effort and behaviour and contribute to the House total.
The House system enhances immeasurably the personal development of our children and they take great pride in representing their House. The system also promotes identity, teamwork and cooperation. It is also great fun and an aspect of school life that the children enjoy very much.
