Sport: Summer Half Term Round-Up

Athletics:
The athletics teams have enjoyed a hugely successful half term, with competitions at Dauntsey’s School, Epsom College, Marlborough College and Lord Wandsworth College so far this term. PGS finished 2nd out of the ten competing schools at the Marlborough Meet.
Our U14 girls’ and boys’, and the U12 girls’ teams have qualified for the next round of the Hampshire Track Knock Out competition, with the next round taking place after the half term.
Six of our athletes competed in the Hampshire Multi-Event competition, with Harry B, Luke T and Josh J taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their age group. Leading on from this, a group of our athletes competed in the Hampshire Schools Multi-Events in Andover on Thursday 22nd May, with Harry B coming 2nd, and Josh J 4th, which means that both boys will join Rosie L (Year 11) in representing Hampshire.
The weekend of 11/12 May saw the Hampshire Athletics Championships take place, where over 400 athletes were competing over the full range of athletics disciplines. PGS are the only school who enters their non club athletes into the competition ensuring they get the most challenging opportunities. We also have a number of athletes who have gone on to join a club to help them progress further. It was great to see so many PGS pupils enjoying the competition and letting their hard work in training shine through. The notable results from the weekend were:
Fola O - 2nd in 100m
Rosie L - 1st in hurdles and 2nd in High Jump
Mesoma N - 3rd in 200m
Will C - 3rd in Steeplechase
Lotti P - 1st in Javelin and 1st in Shot
Daniel K - 1st in Triple Jump
Hattie M - 1st in Discus
Arabella dC - 3rd in High jump
A number of these athletes have now achieved the English Schools entry standard and will hope to be selected for the most prestigious event of the year, the English Schools Championships.
Tennis:
Our tennis teams have enjoyed fixtures with Perins School, King Edward’s Southampton and Thornden School so far, with plenty more league games and friendlies to come. Haohan L in Year 9 has been the outstanding performer to date, and despite playing a year up, he has remained unbeaten so far this season.
Cricket:
The cricket season started with a successful pre-season mini-tour to Oxford for our U14’s and U15’s, with matches against Magdalen College and St Edwards School.
Our girls’ and boys’ cricket teams have since enjoyed block fixtures with Ryde School, Churcher’s College, King Edward’s Southampton, Lancing College and Portsmouth High School, with many pleasing performances and much team progress. The 1st XI Boys have performed very well with three good wins and two narrow defeats so far, and it was brilliant for the 1st XI Girls to win a close game against Embley School.
There has also been solid team progressions throughout the age groups, and this has been reflected in the U12 Boys, U13 Boys and Girls, and U15 Girls already progressing through the County Cup rounds so far.
In terms of individual performance accolades, the following pupils have scored half centuries – Eshan A, Sam M, Sri V with three, Seb A, and Henry H. Harry C has hit two scores in the forties, with Sam M, Elliot A, Huw K and Fred vdW also scoring 40+ runs
For the girls, Amelia D has top scored with an unbeaten 33 runs, along with Emily F and Connie L both being retired after scoring unbeaten 25’s.
On the bowling front, Freddie R has taken a 5 wicket haul within a match, and Henry H took 4 wickets vs Magdalen College.
For the girls, Agnes C took 3 wickets in two maiden overs, and Amelia D took 4 wickets vs PHS. Ava J bowled an incredible hat trick vs Churcher’s College, which resulted in PGS winning that match.
Special mentions also go to Jess M, Lara P and Amelie S for their leadership of and performances within the Year 7 squad.
Thank you to every pupil for their contribution and commitment to PGS Sport this half term. Please enjoy a good week at half term and come back ready to continue performing after the break.
